Yup. And the balefire was mostly a humorous artistic choice. The point is that he has a super weapon powerful enough to destroy the world. Surely that's also enough power to wipe out any darkspawn army that gets sent his way. He already wiped out an entire Trolloc invasion with frickin' gateways.

And it's stated in the book that the DO spent a few years building his influence in private before the world knew what he was. It'd be a lot harder for him to rebuild his armies once everyone knew he was there and how he operated.

I vaguely recall mentioning how TDO would take balefire... he wouldn't. It rips things out of the pattern, and TDO isn't in it...

However, completely disregarding the chance to save the world *was* kinda dumb. I get the whole vibe of "he has to learn to rely on the unaided power of humanity" or something, but having a super-sa(iayajin)-angreal sure can't hurt.

I liked Anthem, and I think Ayn Rand herself illustrates why a hard-line view of her philosophy cannot be taken seriously (she utilized gov. assistance in her old age). Her strong sense of individualism is nothing short of uplifting; it is an excellent counterpoint to the collectivism in which she was raised; on the other hand, her hostility toward altruism is nothing short of deplorable, and her disdain for those who cannot help themselves is more-or-less sociopathic.

I'm always surprised by the Tea Partiers that adulate her -- it's like they're completely unaware of her support for gay rights and abortion rights. And I'm always surprised by liberals that summarily dismiss her, with no idea what she said regarding the power of the individual. I suppose I just don't understand why people on either side of the political spectrum feel the need to paint her with a brush she rejected...

To be fair to Voyager: I'm gay, and I loved Seven's character. Watching someone explore humanity for the first time evokes very...human...emotions. I have no doubt that many of the teenage boys watching the show weren't watching for her struggle to understand the people around her or her difficulties in becoming a part of the crew, but some of us were. And, she was much less whiny than Kes ever was.

Maybe the true terror of Lovecraft is the idea of finding yourself in his story as a genre-savy character with no idea what will happen when you flip the switch. Frustration is the new suspense.

Or maybe I'm drunk. Even odds, I'd say.

Comic was good, but Chern is right, but not because of the amount. If he used balefire on Shai'tan (come at me bro!) then the world would unravel because he (it, thing, whatever) is such an integral part of the world. It's a valid point that Rand gets handed a few magical buttons to destroy things (the sword?) but instead nancies around with them and doesn't use them, then again he'd be rushing his own doom which he definitely doesn't want to do. It's a scale kind of argument, he does one thing, other stuff WILL happen.

I wonder how much longer this appeal to fanservice will continue to work as access to the uncensored byways of the Internet gets more and more ubiquitous. T'Pol decontaminating might draw in viewers in a world where it's difficult to get those sorts of jollies from any other outlet, but in a world where much more explicit content is freely available and just a Google search away T'Pol starts feeling like less of a draw and the onus is back on the series to provide quality entertainment beyond the fanservice.

Voyager and Enterprise are interesting example since they straddled the time period between the Internet being a new thing that was the domain of early adopters and being a ubiquitous tool that everyone had on their phone. Voyager pulled Seven of Nine and completed its run despite arguably weak storylines. Enterprise tried the same thing from the start with T'Pol and got canned when the storytelling didn't hold up.

Interesting times, to be sure.

To be fair, Enterprise would have been my favorite show on TV if it was just 42 minutes of T'Pol "decontaminating" herself every episode. There is a break point where when you have enough sex appeal, you don't need to worry about quality. Look at... well, Playboy probably isn't a fair example, but like Heavy Metal. Most of the stories in that book were nonsense, but hey, boobs.
